Low HDL levels of cholesterol are still a factor for heart risk it is reported. Treatment for the lowering of LDL levels does not negate the risk. A team carrying out the study from Tufts Medical Centre, Boston MA, report their findings.
Data was collected from 20 clinical trials, the JUPITER and ASCOT trials were among those analysed. The levels of HDL in patients who were not taking statin treatment were the same as the levels of HDL presenting in patients who were being treated with statins to lower their LDL levels.
It seems that patients are not being sufficiently prescribed anyway. In certain cases patients are not getting the correct treatment for cholesterol according to a team at the David Geffen School of Medicine, University of California. After a heart attack, patients who should be started on intensive therapy of cholesterol lowering statins but this is not always the case. It is advised that those who survive a heart attack should take statins and combine them with ezetimibe in order to control the levels of good cholesterol too. Evidence from patients suggests that they are not being prescribed in this in this way. This is the message contained in the data collected of 65,000 patients.
Furthermore some specialists say that certain coronary events in certain patients could have been avoided if doctors were prescribing the best treatments which are recommended based on what evidence suggests is the most effective way of treating the condition.
The team analysed the main treatments administered to patients after they had been hospitalized for heart attacks and unstable angina. The meds were analysed from 2005 to 2009. 90% of the patients suffered heart attacks. Less than 40% of the patients were on the type of intensive statin therapy recommended. The others were prescribed with a less intensive treatment which consisted of a single type of stain and at a lower dose. Only 50% of patients with high levels of LDL were put on the recommended and more intense therapy.
